2011 INDIANA SPRINT WEEK WAS THE USUAL – HOT WITH HIGH HUMIDITY – DRY TRACKS – AND SOME GOOD RACING!

CHRIS WINDOM IS SPRINT WEEK CHAMPION AND GETS A $ 3200 ROCKING CHAIR.

July 24, 2011

By Ken Wagner

Over the years I have taken hundreds of racing trips all across the country in search of good racing. Sometimes I found it and sometimes it was less than it could be, but any sprint car race is just like sex, even the bad ones are memorable. This season has been less than desirable as I have only seen 8 races so far. This trip booked me into 9 races in 10 days, wow. There was one thing very different on this trip for me. I didn’t go into the pits for the first time in probably 25 years! It wasn’t that I didn’t want to, but my balky legs just weren’t up to the uneven surfaces of rocks and dirt that I would have had to traverse and those paths have been difficult for me recently. Hopefully, I will be able to have my bad wheels adjusted or overhauled so I can walk comfortable again. In the meantime, without my Mule I am not doing my regular pit walks away from home.

With that said, I actually had a very interesting time on the road as I arrived in Indy on Thursday and Mike Clark picked me up and away we went. He suggested the Lucas Speedway race that night, but since it was pavement, we headed downtown to St Elmo’s fine restaurant where two absolutely great steaks and the famous shrimp cocktails were enjoyed to the fullest by us. The spicy shrimp sauce will knock your head off, but I was game and can describe it kinda like when ice cream gives you that too cold head ache for a few seconds, only this was from the horseradish exploding in your head. A little libation made the night relaxing and enjoyable like all good food and drink can. We noticed the light rain coming down when we left, so I was concerned. Checking the weather forecast later on TV, it appeared to be a little scary as thunder showers were on the schedule for the next 10 days???

We headed to Gas City in the morning and as soon as we got checked into a motel, we headed to the first stop on our tour. It was busy as many motor home cookouts and tail gate parties were in progress. Mike had already been added to Monica Clauson’s blanket procedure, so we didn’t have to worry about a seat in the packed grandstands. She and hubby Bob are grandparents of one Bryan Clauson who would be runner-up for the week’s championship Sprint Week points. Bob and Monica live in a motor home at Gas City during racing season and follow the races at other tracks in the area when they aren’t parked there. They go home to Northern California for the winter, so motor homeing is their life. Monica handled our seats for most of the 7 races and for that I thank her.

This track is one that most enjoy on their trips back there and it was a packed full house when the racing started. We hung out by the nightly Clauson gathering with a lot of “regulars” until it was time to go up in the grandstands. My camera and long lens would come in handy as I would get all my photos for this gig from up there in my grandstand seats. The track looked pretty good early on, but the dust became an issue later. I think that the water trucks back there in Indiana must cost too much to operate because they seem to be parked a lot. Even when they have water on the track early, they use that “sheep’s foot “ thing that squeezes it out, so by the time qualifying is over, and the cars get on it, the surface is dry as a bone from that point on.

I would have two California drivers to cheer on during the week, well I guess there were really a lot more than that, but the majority of them live back there and race three times a week. My two get to race may two times a month, if that. The little red sucker came East with owner Ron Chaffin, crew chief Bruce Bromme Jr and father and son team of Mike Spencer Jr (the driver) and Sr (the crewman). Matt Mitchell caught a ride in the Sr Yeley car that wasn’t ready for prime time and he left it after two non-productive races. Matt should have brought his own rig, he would have done better.

There were 48 cars at the first stop and Jerry Coons Jr set fast time at 13.175. The later you came out, the worse the track was qualifying wise. They took the top 32 like normal into the heat races and the rest got the joy of a Consi where the top 4 would line up one individually at the back of the four heats. At least two hot dogs were stuck in this one, Damion Gardner & Hunter Schuerenberg, but they both transferred. The heat winners were Shane Cottle, Jon Stanbrough, Mike Spencer and Thomas Meseraull.

Dave Darland manages to shine at most big races and tonight was no exception as he started on the front row and never looked back, leading all 30 laps. It was his 15th Sprint Week win, the most in history by one driver. It was also his 76th National USAC win putting him in a tie with Jack Hewitt for 7th on that all time list. Chris Windom ran his first of 3 second places in a row and that started him on his way to the points championship he earned when it was all over. It was pretty racy behind Darland with some dust kicked up here and there, but the first night was done as Mike Spencer hung in there for 13th.

We stayed in the same motel for the next night as Kokomo is just about 25 miles or so down the road. It was still a bit warm, so we hung around the Clauson group in the shade until it was time for a pork chop sandwich. They serve those inside the race way, so after I ate mine in a shady spot near the beer stand, I decided to stay there until it was time to go up into the stands. Because the sun is in your face in the main grandstands, I planned to wait in the shade until qualifying and spent time visiting with many other fans. The things you hear and learn in “mixed” company, what a hoot! This grandstand has the highest individual steps up I have ever seen. They are about 1-1/2 the normal size and so I looked like a three legged monkey going up them to my seat saved by Monica. The view was fine (thanks Monica) and my camera worked good for turns 3 and 4. The sun kept me from pointing to 1 and 2 until the sun went down.

Of the 40 cars that came to race, Hunter Schuerenberg set fast time at 12.675, had a problem in his heat, but won the semi and the main. He had to get past Chris Windom with 5 laps to go to make his first win of two in the week a fact. The heat winners were Keith Bloom, Bryan Clauson, Blake Fitzpatrick and Robert Ballou. Casey Riggs took the early lead until Chad Boespflug claimed it from him. Then he and Windom had a little battle going back and forth for the lead for a few laps until Windom moved away alone and Hunter joined the scene to badger him until he made the winning pass on lap 25. Mike Spencer had his best finish of the week at 5th as it became one of the best races of the 7, As there were 4 different leaders and 6 lead changes, so it was racy! I now know why locals flock to this place and some call it the raciest little track in Indiana.

The trip to Lawrenceburg took several hours as we worked our way across the state. It was still hot when we arrived at the track and parked next to the Clauson group again. It was cooler in the shade and eventually I had to go get in the new grandstands. Since I had last been there, they put up new grandstands and built a newer, faster race track. It is a real motor burner and leads me to wonder why they would do that to their local racers? To look at it you knew it was special, but here’s where the rub comes in. The broken water truck didn’t get on the track after the cars got on it and it was dry slick and dusty most of the night. After the slide job heats, they brought out a bunch of track packers and for some reason packed it backwards, a thing I never understood, so we could have an entirely smooth racing surface. Wow, that was special? Can you imagine not watering or even scratching the surface, and packing it for a long time making it even harder and drier than it was? Oh well, I hope they find someone to prepare it for next year or if I go I might be tempted to go see a baseball game instead. What an excellent facility and what a waste.

Hunter Schuerenberg set fast time again at 13.922 and won the semi again, but didn’t duplicate his feature win when he had a problem in the main and finished 21st. The fast flying on the track made up one of those “Train Races” we hate and are more like outlaw events with little passing and lots of lapping. Robert Ballou led all 30 laps and Chris Windom came in second again. But, it was a race, so quit whining! Spencer was 13th and we left this place in the hot evening after the 39 car show. I can’t help but imagine what a well prepared track could have given the fans with this high banked oval.

Monday dawned HOT and it was exactly like we were walking into a furnace and camping out in it all day and night. It was so hot when we had our Shake N Steak breakfast, I couldn’t believe it. Seriously, it was 95 degrees and 85 percent humidity as we checked into to a nearby motel. Well, the room was so hot, Mike demanded a different room, which turned out to be more of the same, so we got our money back and moved to another place where the hallways were cooler than the rooms we escaped from. Air-conditioning at last!

We waited until way late in the afternoon to drive to North Vernon where a non USAC race for $3000 to win was happening. After getting in the grandstands and drinking two waters, I still had my back to the sun and I felt like bacon sizzling on a skillet, really, it was miserable. Unfortunately, it was more miserable on the track as only 22 cars appeared with only a handful who could win. After each car had 1 (that’s 1, uno, just a single lap) on the clock, they started the heats and the main event straight up. I have never seen that, even with the outlaws. Chad Boespflug & Justin Grant raced each other for 30 laps in the feature and the rest just throttled around behind, never a threat. Justin took home the money and I can’t help but think the promoter would have been better off to pay the USAC sanction fee and get another 20 cars for the slim crowd to watch. A shame, but it was a race on a day off and Mike was heard to say something like “we could have gone to a nice dinner or stayed in the motel”! The water truck did somewhat spray the very dusty infield midway thru the night to help out there?

Tuesday was Mike’s wife Evelyn’s time to fly in for the rest of the week. Yes it was still hot, but we picked her up at the Indy airport and drove to Terre Haute to check in to a nice air-conditioned motel. We three had dinner at the Texas Roadhouse, one of my all time favorites, where a steak and a beer went down nicely. We had a lot to do the next day as it was time to celebrate Jack Kraemer’s passing with a dedicated memorial to him at his home track, Terre Haute.

Up early to head out to get organized on Wednesday morning for our special day for Jack Kraemer in his memory. After Jack passed in January, Mike Clark began working on the Jack Kraemer Memorial Award. Mike and I talked about it and he thought he might raise $500 or so, but I told him he would get more. He did all the planning that included getting the USAC OK to do it on July 13 at Terre Haute. He had a lot of help as others supported his efforts and the news of the event kept hitting IOW and SCRAFAN on the internet. Mike needed a plaque, a check, a decal and a bunch of fliers to advertise with. The plaque was from Trophy City in San Jose, CA. The check and decals were made by Timeless, AKA Bobby Michnowicz, and the art work for the fliers, check and decals were all done by Mrs Wags. Randy Mortland and his girl Friday Debbie did a bunch of stuff including a banner, some beer coolers and some sprint car cookies that were awesome. I took one home to Terry, but it was all in pieces when I smilingly gave it to her when I got home. As the day started out, Mike had nearly $3000 committed to pay out.

First we had to go to Jack’s brother Tom’s house to pick up Jack’s old Ford racing van, one that a lot of his friends including Mike and me, travelled to a lot of races in. It had racing flags on the back, a house air-conditioner mounted in one of the rear doors and decals on the side windows. Then it was to the track to set up “Camp Thirsty” just like Jack always did during his racing watching days at Terre Haute. We put up an easy-up and mounted the Camp Thirsty banner and the day began. We had beer and chicken livers in Jack’s honor just like he always did. Mike continued to collect money and as the day wore down, he hit $ 4525! It was really heartwarming and amazing for Mike to gather that much money from friends all over. The final payout was: The Jack Kraemer Memorial Hard Charger Award was $2500 and went to Shane Cottle who came from 23rd to 5th in A-Main, the hard luck car owner $ 500 went to Brandon Mattox after his car crashed in qualifying. Additional awards were $ 400 for a hard luck owner that went to .J.J. Hughes after his crash in the B-Main, another hard luck owner, Hank Byram received $ 325 after his car crashed in the A-Main, the 1st non-qualifier, Andrew Elson was 7th in B-Main and he received $ 400, fast time Keith Bloom received $ 300, and $100 for the Brent Long Memorial Fund. He was a recently killed Terre Haute Police Officer. Good Job Mike Clark and all those who helped him! It was all the better as Jacks family came and enjoyed the memorial!!!

The big half mile seemed to be racy as the night started with Keith Bloom setting fast time at 20.640 over 33 cars in attendance. He nearly almost won this one, finishing second to Chris Windom in the feature. Bloom passed Windom for the lead on lap 15 and Windom regained it a few laps later, but they had a great battle as Windom stayed closer to the bottom and Bloom rode the high line. He really hung in there without making a mistake, and was right there at the end. It was the action track this week as passing was normal and the hard charger came from 23rd to 5th, wow! We loaded all the Camp Thirsty stuff back in the van and it was sent home. A lot of goodbyes to Jack’s family and well wishers and this big day was done, and Mike could finally relax.

On to Brownstown we went and a new track for me, as I had never even driven by this place. It was the sight of the famous $10,000 to win CRA challenge to beat them back in the day, and a local no-name driver did it somehow. It was probably more money than he had won in several years total! The grandstand is covered with a low hanging cover and there were a lot of 10 inch square posts to block my view. It took some doing to use my camera, but I got a few shots of the 42 cars that showed up. I had jumped in the car with Kansas City’s Leroy Beddingfield that morning to keep him company and give the Clark’s more room in the packed SUV until Sunday morning.

Levi Jones came out of his slump and set fast time at 14.474 in his Stewart sponsored entry. With a good car count in the house, they all got in the heats and the heat winners were Mike Spencer, Damion Gardner, Casey Riggs & Wes MacIntyre . Brady Short won the Semi as the water truck was fun to watch. This one had water in it and they tried to make the stock car track less dusty. When the first heat was on the track, the red water truck jumped on the racing surface and I thought he might tag the rear. No, he was mad they didn’t let him do his thing and before he was done, water was down and the surface was packed and packed and packed. The racing was good at times with some annoying dust, but when Casey Riggs passed Chad Boespflug and held off Levi Jones, I think some were surprised. Mike Spencer was 13th again and the night was done. I had a really bad pork tenderloin sandwich that appeared to be cooked last week and some nearby told me the pork chop sandwich was the way to go. Now you tell me!

It was time for Bloomington and I always enjoyed this place. Normally in the past, Jack had our cooler and chairs in his rig and we got a top row middle seat that was easy to see from. Nowadays they open the track the day before and we missed that chair planting opportunity. Monica did her thing in the uneven boarded grandstands seat s for the group, but I chose a little higher perch and sat alone to take my photos just above the walkway. That way I could visit with all those who came by to say “I didn’t recognize you without your polka dot hat”, a comment that became all too often along the tour. It was safe back in Perris in my mule where I forgot it!

This time there were 45 cars, nothing like the days of 70 or more, but certainly plenty enough! Dave Darland got the quickest time on the quarter mile oval with a 11.408 and the Consi was run before the heats to grab 4 more to the 32 already in. Chris Windom, Brady Short, Jerry Coons Jr & local Danny Holtsclaw won the heats with Coleman Gulick getting the Semi win. This might have been the raciest of the seven races as there was action on and off the track all night.

Wes McIntyre looked like he had the fast way around on top until he slid over the top, not once but twice, and was left back in 20th at the end for his small mistakes. Hunter Schuerenberg chased him mightily until he slipped by and went on to win his 2nd of Sprint Week race keeping ahead of the cagey Darland near the end. Mike Spencer was 17th as he didn’t pick the right line as often as others, and drifted back at the end. I think he was as high as 10th at one time, but he looked good on the little track.

Only one more race of Sprint Week left and Windom had a 35 point lead on Clauson, so it seemed inevitable that the orange # 5 would prevail at the racy Haubstadt race place. More so when he lined up a good 10 spots ahead of Bryan. It was still pretty warm, as the heat goes high in Indiana in the summer, when Leroy and I pulled in to check out the haulers going in to the pits. We decided it was too hot to go waltzing in the pits to talk with some, so pulled around to the back stretch side and discovered they had reserved seats with backs up there! I was excited, but unfortunately, as good as those seats looked, it wasn’t the best decision I ever made. There were only a few seats left when I went to the ticket window and I didn’t realize that the front row reserved section was the one and only path that every last one of those fans would pass in front of us to get to their own better seat. I got to see a lot of belt buckles and midsections of all who came there, yet in the few openings I had to see the racing; it was pretty good and way more comfortable with the seat back. Monica’s seats for the gang were lower and also affected by the many trollers’ in and out, but I’ll know better next time. Next time when I am told they only have front row seats left, I might want to rethink my decision and perhaps even plan ahead. Leroy didn’t desert me, but he was stepped on and bothered by it just like me.

Jon Stanbrough took fast time at 13.233 on the well prepared track and before long it was a racy place when the heats took off. Only 29 cars showed here, long tow from Indy I guess, and Dave Darland, Blake Fitzpatrick, Mike Spencer & Casey Riggs won the action packed heats. Actually the best of the four was watching the little red sucker come from 5th to win on a last corner pass by Mike to get the checkered flag! Levi Jones won the semi as several hot dogs missed the transfer.

The battle for the lead went a long way into the event as Tracy Hines took the lead from the start with Damion Gardner right on his tail. Gardner made the pass by on lap 5 for the lead, but Tracy hung in there. The Demon had chosen the top to go forward while Tracy was on the bottom and came almost even with him every time they passed the flagman. This went on until finally Gardner got enough of a space to cut down in front of his line, and that was all she wrote. Tracy chased hard behind until he spun out on his own and then the modern day cowboy Daron Clayton took up the chase. Daron had been coming with a top groove run that was fun to watch. Early on it looked like he would catch em’ all, but it didn’t happen as the Demon was pretty fast down in the middle line for his first Sprint Week win. Something for the California fans to cheer about.

Chris Windom won the Sprint Week crown with his 10th place finish, 29 points ahead of Bryan Clauson who was 7th on the night. Mike Spencer finished a creditable 8th in the point standings and did a great job all week. The track was a little off after the last prep job done on it. They do such a good job on the surface there, it is always racy, but this time I think they kept the track packers on way too long and probably didn’t even have to work it, it was so good early! Just my opinion, but I never miss a race there when I go back, it is always great.

Afterwards, Leroy and I headed quickly to the motel to get ready for an early launch for both of us. Leroy would be up at 5 Am to head back to KC, and I would be ready to stuff myself back in the packed Clark machine for a 400 plus mile ride to Sun Prairie, WI for a midget show we planned to end my stay back there this trip. The heat was soooo bad, and had it been known back during the planning stages, would have probably changed our minds for this portion of the trip and I would have gone home on Sunday!

The next morning, we went off on a long ride into what appeared to be a Wisconsin oven just like the Indiana one. It was hotter than ever up there, the lady at the motel said she didn’t remember when it was this hot, but we checked into the old motel hopefully where it was cool. On the way up there, we called to see if they had WI-FI so I could update putting pictures on my website, both from Steve Lafond and my own, but they said no! When we arrived I saw the internet hook-up and surprisingly they admitted they had it? Don’t get too excited. It took several times before I got on and it was slooooow! It took a couple of hours to load 20 pictures, a function that normal transmitting takes only a few minutes, but it sort of worked.

Evelyn decided against the heat and stayed in the motel room while Mike and I headed to the track nearby. It was hot and they had some nearly 30 midgets, 3 winged lightning sprints and some other stuff. The large spread out seating areas, some grandstands and some individual long standalone board seating, was fairly full as the action on the track was fun to watch. Jerry Coons Jr showed up to win the thing in a Wilke car and we got out of there with our first real threat of rain coming. Point leader Brad Kuhn I think was second. Darren Hagen ran third and his sprint car driving is on hold I heard. It was enjoyable, especially after the sun went down.

It did rain overnight as we headed to breakfast, and was still spitting as we had ate and then headed to the Milwaukee airport. I wanted some famous Wisconsin cheese, but it didn’t happen as nobody knew where to find some and the cheese factories were off the beaten path. I was 5 hours too soon for my flight when the Clark duo dropped me off, so I had to cool my heels until I could check in, no sooner than 4 hours I was told. I had my Kendle with me so I read. Later I got checked in and ate a Johnny Rockets burger (UGH AS AIRPORT FOOD IS AWFUL) and read some more. The flight was on time and I boarded for the 4 hour trip. There was some good news and some bad news in this flight. We arrived at Las Vegas 25 minutes early (good) and sat on the tarmac for 35 minutes (bad) so Terry was circling until I called to say I had stepped off the plane now 30 minutes late. All was well as we were home and in bed before long.

I must analyze this trip as not the best one I ever took to Indiana, but not the worst perhaps as I remember a record setting heat was some years back. But overall the tracks were dry and dusty giving me less entertainment than I expected. The car counts were higher than expected, an average over 39, with plenty of quality cars, but some that I expected to charge didn’t and some unexpected winners appeared. That’s good, yet I wonder if there isn’t some money for a real track prep person if only the promoters would spend it! There were two 30 lap winners and three races that had only 2 leaders. Kokomo and Terra Haute had the most lead changes and better battle for the wins. Overall I would rate this trip a B with heat and dust the negatives and the cars and fans a plus.

Thanks to Mike & Leroy for the rides and company and the fun food times. Let’s hope I can recover before the PAS next Saturday. Even if it’s hot, I know the track will be racy! And have water in it! See you there next with my polka dot hat!!
