Titans 12 - Coronado 1 Their 2nd game in the playoffs was on a warm night (duh) at Wilson field, a great place to watch baseball. They came out slow and gave up an unearned run before getting their bats going and winning in a 10 run rule 7 innings.
It looks a little cloudy as the Titans warm up, but no it was hot and no breeze.

Congratulations to the Gaels on their 5th State Championship in a row. The very talented team covered as expected. With so many standouts it was hard to pick a hero and yet there were so many! Johnny Field, T J White, Kenny Meimerstorf, Joey Gallo, Neil Lawhorn, Erik Van Meetran, Johnny Sewald and Cory Welch were part of the core killer force that just continued to win. A special hats of to my "like a grandson" Cory as he added a third state championship to his 3 year playing career (2 at Calvery) and showed he really has a change up! It was fun watching and I hope the team realizes what they just did in Reno.
Gorman 10 - Sierra Vista 9
It was the 4th time these two teams met this year. The previous three had two 1 run games and one a little easier for BG, for Gorman, a 6 to 2 game. SV scored 2 in the top of the 1st and GB came back with 4 of their own. With what appeared to be ease, BG added 6 more to make it 10 to 2 in the 4th. Somebody forgot to tell SV the game was over as they came up with 3 in the fifth and 4 in the sixth to get within 1. It was very exciting when the 7th started with Cory Welch on the mound to finish them off. Before you could say wait a minute, the bases were full with only 1 out and his friend and former teammate Nick Kingman coming to bat. A power hitter against a power pitcher, what to do? When Nick hit the ball hard, it at first looked like it might get thru between the shortstop and the bag, but a dive and an easy toss finished it off. The shortstop grabbed the liner and tossed it to the 2nd baseman and the pile of bodies developed around the mound. It was a wild game with lots of highs and lows for both, but the pain for the loser was the bad part. The joy for the wnow head to Reno. Wish I could go, but it's not in the cards right now. Tough luck for a very good SV team and wait until next year!

Erik behind the plate.
Is Erik giving Johnny some noise?

Gorman 4 - Sierra Vista 3
A rematch between the Gaels and the Lions was as good as advertised as Cory Welch and Nick Kingman, (former teammates on two 1A state championships together at Calvery along with T J White and a bunch more that scattered to other schools after their sophomore season) battled hard against each other for their second game in a row. Cory went the distance to get the win and Nick was relieved in 7th as the home team tried to even the slate between the two. T J White powered one over the wall on a two run shot that turned out to be a key in the win and the tension was felt in the packed seating area of the close game. A great block of the plate by Neil Lawhorn saved the day against the tying run coming in and everyone worked hard. A little spat between the ump and the Gorman manager was obviously over the top by the ump after calling out a batter on a strike that appeared to be not in the zone. The batter walked off with a warning ( I didn't see his lips move) and the coach went to discuss. No arguing about balls and strikes said the man, but he looked like he was spoiling for an argument for some reason.
Missy and Terry come to watch the amazing Welch family member in action.
Now they are ready for the game!
The team mills around getting ready for the game to start.
T J White's dad Kenny is always there to support his son. He was a coach of the Calvery team back then.

You can tell by the posture of Cory Welch, the ump just called him out. What transpired was not smart of the ump as he played word games with the Gorman coach.
Wesley Denzler was safe at second base!!!
Nick Kingman is a stud. He pitched well enough to win and had two hits against his old teammate. You will find him and Cory together on the Calvery Lions near the bottom of this link when I covered them. They have both changed.
Cory pitched well except for one mistake, and finished it off in grand style.

Gorman 7 - Henderson 2
My first trip to Bishp bgorman's bew stadium to watch my nearly grandson Cory Welch play. I've been seeing him play since he was in Little League and he's always been a standout. The game was in BG's control early 3 to 0 with a Johnny Field three run shot and went on from there. Cory went 3 for 4 with a homer, a double and a single. Chris Tulak pitched a complete game and got the win.
Nice scoreboard at the BG complex where an Easter baseball tourney is going on.

Erik Van Meetren lines one up and nails it.
A Welch day at the game.
Joey Gallo snaps off a hit.
Neil Lawhorn looks ready to hit here.
Game over and it's knuckle knockin' time.
Now, where's the Gatoraid???
Scoreboard!
Legion Baseball 2009 Updated 7/31/09
S Nevada Titans 10 - Rancho 5 The Semi finalgame was a rematch with Rancho. Their pitcher was fast with some off speed stuff that drove the Titans crazy. The dugout hazing the pitcher's curve ball finally got the coach to tell them to "quit whining and go have a good AB"! This kid, whose name escapes me, struck out at least a dozen and kept them off balance for 7 innings. Then the Titans got to him in the 8th and scored 6 times. Until then, this game was up for grabs it seemed. The real power part of the line-up, the top four hitters, only had 3 hits between them, and two were by Joey Rickard. The team had the least hits and runs scored in the playoff three games so far, but were able to win in the end and will take on Reno for the championship on Saturday. T J White pitched 6 innings, and 145 pitches according to his dad Kenny. Neil Lawhorn did a great job behind the plate and there were no errors this game!
T J White pitched a strong 6 innings as the Rancho pitcher held the Titans at bay.
Joey Rickard went 2 for 2 and had a great night.
Johnny "B Good" Field played hard again.
Eric Van Meetren had a tough night, but came thru as he started the 8th inning ralley that got em' over the hump.
Neil Lawhorn played a strong game behind the plate this night.
Joey Gallo played third all night and obviously has a strong arm.
T J White had two hits and finished up at first base.
Cory Welch at bat. Can you see the bat?
Kenny Meimerstorf Came in to play left field. He got an im[ortant hit late in the game.
Neil Lawhorn made an amazing catch of a little pop up that was a study in hustle.
I think this is Jeff Malm at bat.
See anything funny here? The scoreboard operator seemed to be a bit lax often as diffeent items were wrong or not updated in a timely and correct way.
Jeff Malm took over in the 7th and shut them out for two innings.
S Nevada Titans 16 - Rancho 6 This was the 2nd Legion playoff game and when both teams showed up in black, I kinda laughed. Rancho changed to white and the good guy theory was immediately squashed by the team in black like Darth Vader using his light saber against them. Cory Welch went 3 for 3, Johnny Fields 4 for 5, and plenty of other timely hitters made this one a 7 inning, 10 run rule ending. TJ White hammered one over the 345 sign in left field and made one do or die outstanding play at third base as well as a great start of a double play that shut off a rally. A strong pitching job by Joey Gallo and his followers set the stage, and the team came together to move on to the next round.
The night starts with the American Legion ceremony like normal.
OK, lets go!
The group huddle is the last thing before the home team takes the field.
The infield warms up while the pitcher gets ready.
T J White at third base.
Johnny Field at 2nd base
Cory Welch at shortstop
Wesley Denzler in left field
Joey Richard in center field
Neil Lawhorn in right field
Jeff Malm at first base
Joey Gallo on the mound.
Joey pitched well and got good support.
Joey Richard whacked it pretty hard all night as he went 1 for 4 and had 2 RBI's. A couple of near wall shots were caught.
Neil Lawhorn was 2 for 4 on the night and played well.
Joey Gallo on the hammer
Jeff Malm cracks one!
Talk about a monster home run off the bat of T J White. He nailed one over the left field wall and took off in his home run trot!
The traditional home plate greeting was provided by Neil Lawhorn and Wesley Denzler.
EWric Van Meetren was 2 for 3 and had 2 RBI's as he hammered the ball.
Cory Welch was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's and two walks.
Wesley Denzler had 2 hits and powered the ball.
Johnny Field was 4 for 5 with 4 RBI's including a walk off two run single that made the 10 run rule work.
Chris Tulak came in to relieve and did well.
Tyler Wagner, no relation, comes in to close it out. He did well. I wonder if they call him Wags?
Looks like a match before the game as this cute blond was with her Titan boyfriend?
The team starts to celebrate before knuckle knockin' time.
Who's next might be the battle cry here.
That's a big guitar I found on the way home.
S Nevada Titans 19 - Arbor View 10 The opening game of the American Legion State Tournament for the Titans was a hard game to watch early as the Titans came out slow and made enough errors to make it interesting. After they got their hitting shoes on, Eric Van Meetren led them with 4 RBI's and some timely hitting. Three home runs made it seem easy at the end, but the Titans only looked nervous at first and came on strong to close out AV.
They are getting ready to warm up as my "grandson" Cory Welch moves around.
Cory Warms up with Johnny Field. He is pitching tonight so his mind is on his fastball, I am sure.
The teams line up on the baselines and do the National Anthem and then listen to the Legion goals and good sportsmanship guidelines.
Here are the non-starters prior to the starting line-up intro's.
Cory pitches sometimes and plays shortstop or in the outfield. He has a good fastball, but needs to develope some kind of a off speed pitch to keep them from sitting on his hard stuff.
Cory looks comfortable on the mound. The 3 errors in the AV big inning didn't help his cause, but they overcame it to win.
Cory whacking it!
Cory gets a hit, then goes to second and finally scores.
Johnny "B Good" Field goes long and is greeted at home plate.
Knuckle Knockin' time is always better when you win!
S Nevada Titans 13 - San Clemente 10 7/12/09 - This was the championship game of the Danny Hughes Durango Tournament. This team has been on an almost daily quest to play the summer away. They seem to average a game a day and in this heat, wow. They were meeting San Clemente for the second time after beating them 13 - 4 the first game, so it lookedd like a slam dunk, but that's why they play the games. Cory Welch pitched four innings and gave up 7 runs after a 6 run inning ran him back to center field. He had good control, but his fast ball was what the visitors were sitting on when they came around the second time. He had several ground balls up the middle really ruin a good outing. He left the game behind 7 -2, but the Titan bats were up to the challenge. They caught up in the bottom of the fourth only to get stung by the gofer ball, a 2 run shot that gave the Tritons the lead again. They made it 10 - 7 before the Titans came up in the last inni
with the knowledge they had to score three just to tie. The Titan bats thundered and they scored three to tie quickly and then took the lead on a passed ball. The last two runs came on a long fly off the bat of Cory Welch that was caught at the wall, but two runs tagged and scored before the could relay it in. Probably the highlight of the day, except for winning the championship, was the long home run over the centerfield fence, including the double high fence, by Johnny Field, the spunky 2nd baseman. TJ White came in the bottom of the ninth to close up and put em' down 1-2-3 for the end of the night. He played a strong 3rd the first 6 innings. Neil Lawhorn threw out a runner at the plate on a long throw from right field, good job.
Cory Welch starts the game off with this great swing. I can see how he generates the power he puts on display. He hit for the cycle in this tournament and continues to shine on the diamond.
T J White played a stellar third base and does a great job with his bat.
T J leads off from first, but didn't get a ride home this inning.
Jeff Malm's big bat was in evidence this day. He had two hits and played first base very well.
Jeff throws a few grounders to the infielders between innings.
T J White and Joey Gallo mix it up fielding grounders from Jeff.
Cory Welch on the mound. He pitched well until the 4th inning when he got tagged for a bunch of grounders up the middle.
What a sweet swing by Johnny Field. When this ball landed it had cleared the double tall centerfield fence.
Erik Van Meetren greets Johnny after his home run trot around the bases.
Erik Van Meetran Had two hits on the day and drove in a run.
Neil Lawhorn had a hit, and RBI and threw out a runner at the plate on a great throw.
Joey Gallo had 3 hits and 4 RBI's on the day, the last two tied the game in the last inning.
Wesley Denzler had his swings today as he played left field.
Kenny Meimerstorf had 2 hits and an RBI today.
Cory hit two rocket shots, but wasn't very lucky this day, but still is hitting nearly 600. He hit one shot right to the centerfield wall that drove in two runs.
Johnny Field hit the long one and made several excellent plays at second.
T J White came in to close out the victory and shut em' down.
After knuckle knocking with the runner-ups, the team heads to finish their day with the coaches.
- It wasn't one of the most scintillating games I ever saw, but the Titans did what it takes to win when there weren't a lot of hits. Some call it small ball, but it was a combo of several things including the tying and winning runs coming in on wild pitches.
Dugout all ready to go as the game starts.
