SETH WILSON- #17

Grandpa was an Indy driver and throughout the years, Seth had always wanted to emulate him, but the Wilson family had gotten away from auto racing. His first opportunity came in 1996, after acquiring a Dwarf Car to race on the pavement. Getting his feet wet and running sporadically for a couple of years and adding dirt racing to the agenda, Seth purchased a new Dwarf car for the 2000 season, but a weekend dirt bike ride ended the year before it got started, when both wrists were broken in a crash. This setback gave the inspiration needed to excel and Wilson claimed the 2001 CDCRA championship.
In the 2002 season, Seth set his sights on the Western States dwarf Car Championship, which brings together over 90 of the best of seven states in four two-day shootouts. He clinched the championship in early August with an unprecedented three-race sweep. He had also won six out of thirteen CDCRA races with three-second place finishes.
Feeling that he had reached the pinnacle at that level, Wilson went shopping for a sprint car and purchased a JB chassis driven by Richard Griffin for the 2001 NWWC season. The sale of the Dwarf car gave Seth the funds to purchase a used Shaver engine from Fischer Motorsports and maintained by Richard Catten at R.C Performance. Now he was ready to vie for the 2003 SCRA Rookie of the Year title and get a little seat time late in 2002.
Seth was born twenty-eight years ago in Newport Beach and now resides in San Clemente with his wife Rachel, eight year-old son, Skyler and seven month old daughter, Julia. During the week you will find him as the Director of Sales for Racing Optics, a developer of the tear-offs, we see sprint car drivers pulling off their helmets and also on a bigger scale on the racers of NASCAR, where these sheets of thin film material are layered over the windshield and the layers are peeled away at each pit stop. In May of 2002, Seth received his first US Patent for the laminated tear-offs and a second patent in January of 2003 for another that will be used in paintball. This is a family business operated by the Wilson family with Seth, his Dad, Steve and Uncle, Bart as the principles.
School sports found Seth playing running back for the Capistrano Valley Christian High School football team, earning CIF utility player of the year. Leisure time is spent with his family, with another budding race driver in Skyler, who is now wheeling a quarter midget. Seth would like to race professionally, but his current focus is on becoming competent in racing sprint cars and being a regular in the nightly features, making top-ten finishes and eventually winning a Main Event. Wilson named his Grandpa, Dempsey Wilson as his racing hero and says his track of preference is Perris.
Behind every successful race team are a number of unsung heroes, doing all the work to keep the car race ready and especially repair the car from altercations during the night. Taking care of these tasks for Seth are his Dad, Steve who functions as the Crew Chief, with help from Bill Didion, Rob Anderson, Jason Moreheiser and joined by the UPS driver that services Racing Optics, Steve Warren, who takes care of the tires. Sponsorship comes from Racing Optics, Parts Master, San Juan Auto Supply, DES Systems and Drexer Auto body.
Wilson attended the Cory Kruseman Driving School in 2001 and says he felt like he had found a home. Seth says that Grandma, Manon Wilson, Dempsey's widow, has been very supportive of his racing efforts and is a regular at the SCRA events. Wilson acknowledged the Fischer Motorsports team, Cory Kruseman and Troy Rutherford as racers that have taken time to give tips and encouragement, helping Seth to overcome some of the rookie errors.
