GREG BRAGG- #12

Greg Bragg is a driver that a number of fans have seen previously racing in the Lightning/Mini Sprints or Micro Midgets. Bragg enjoyed much success in his early racing endeavors, scoring one hundred fifty-six feature victories over a thirteen-year period.

Earlier this year, Greg was contacted by Bill and Evelyn Pratt, owners of the #12 SCRA sprint car to see if he was interested in a ride. Of course this was a new challenge with a couple of twists. First of all, there was a large increase in horsepower and secondly, this would be his first outing in a non-wing car. So far, Greg has acclimated himself well and exhibited the same racing skills that carried him to success in his earlier race experiences.

Bragg began his racing career in 1989, racing Micro Midgets at Visalia’s Plaza Park Speedway. Stepping up to Mini Sprints in 1995, he captured the Northern Stars Championship in 1998, BCRA Mini Sprint title in 1999 and then moved to the Southern California Lightning Sprints adding championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002. In 2000 and 2001, Greg also journeyed to Australia for three weeks each year and raced in a Mini Sprint, claiming five out of eight feature wins and setting two track records.

Greg is a native of Visalia in the Central Valley, residing there with his wife Lori, daughters Kaitee and Jaymee, 11 & 9 and son Garrett who is six. He supports the family as a walnut farmer. Bragg wrestled in high school and at Cuesta Junior College. He earned a degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

At the age of thirty-six, Greg says that his racing career has gone farther than he ever expected and that future racing will be to become a competitive racer with the SCRA. Having experienced racing success over the years, Bragg hopes to continue at this level and be a weekly challenger to the front-runners.

The Pratt’s #12 is an Okie chassis fitted with an engine prepared by R.C. Performance. Jim Evans serves as the Crew Chief, with help from Jim Blakesley, David Gopp, Larry Stone and of course, Bill and Evelyn. Ken Alden, who was Greg’s car owner in the Lightning Sprints, also helps out. Greg says that Steve Ostling and Steve Wiliby have been most helpful with set up advice and driving tips. Sponsorships come from J.F.K. Co., Pratt Racing, Allen & Hein Inc.

Bragg acknowledges Agnaldo Tamariz, a Visalia neighbor, who was his first Mini-Sprint owner as they teamed for five or six years. He also mentions current SCRA car owner Hal Engstrom, who recommended him to the Pratts. Greg mentions Bakersfield, Ventura and Santa Maria as track favorites, preferring the smaller tracks for the side by side racing.

Motorcycle riding, off-roading and camping are pursuits, when time is available. Race Day is a family outing for the Braggs as they pack up and head to the venue of the week.
